Darkness Come to Light [Iliana]

While a Hogwarts student can find all they need in Diagon Alley, magical adults may need to venture just around the corner into Knockturn Alley, a dark, twisting alleyway devoted to the Dark Arts. Located at the junction of Knockturn and Horizont Alleys is The Curious Chimaera, a quaint hybrid café/bar that is popular among Aurors.

Darkness Come to Light [Iliana]

Post by Nathaniel Wright »

He'd been wondering how to approach her once he'd learned of her brother and his crime from his father. He had been discussing possibly going to Azkaban to handle him himself, and once he'd heard that familiar last name, Nate couldn't help but ask who he was talking about. He'd never pushed Iliana to talk about her past, figuring it was one of those things you just didn't ever want to talk about, which he knew plenty about. She was the only one who knew about his own situation.

He had learned about her apartment before, but finding it was an entirely different situation. He hadn't exactly tried to find it before or asked her too many weird questions about where it was. He just knew it was in Diagon Alley.

It was still winter break, so Nate had plenty of time to wander the Alley, looking around, trying to picture where she might want to get an apartment, and what kind of place would be okay with a student living in their building unsupervised. He rubbed at the back of his head, letting out a breath, his breath being a little cloud in front of him.

After he finally started asking some of the nearby clerks some questions, he walked up to a door he hoped was hers and knocked on it.

He was going to feel really stupid if she was out and found him knocking on some stranger's door because he never thought it appropriate to ask exactly where her apartment was. When they had dated, he didn't want to pry too much into her life outside of school, and then when they broke up... He felt like such an ass letting that kind of thing get between them, especially now that he knew what it was she was trying to keep buried. Her past didn't change who she was, or who she'd decided to be regardless of it.

But what was he going to say when she opened the door? For once, he hadn't thought that far ahead. He just had felt the urge to come see her after what he'd heard. Realizing he was about to make himself look stupid, he swore a little under his breath, looking around for any kind of excuse for being here...or maybe somewhere to hide.

Ili had left school grounds as quickly as she could once Winter break had come, heading straight for her apartment with Astra and Pika in tow. Aunt Marya would be furious if she left either at the school over the break. She'd settled in and aside from a few shopping trips along Diagon Alley, Ili hadn't bothered to leave her apartment at all. This was normal for her, hiding away during holidays except for the day itself then she would travel to her Uncle and Aunt.

She just needed to prepare herself mentally for it all before she faced them, keeping it all bottled up was harder and harder as she got older but Pet refused to let them see anything more than her at her best. They'd seen her in pieces enough, she had to show them she was okay, even if she wasn't always. Perhaps that was why she'd been able to understand Nate so well, why she'd offered to help and had plans to that end as well. While she was back in France she would discuss the situation with them and see how her family could help.

Family, it was such a strange word and the more often she heard others mention it or complain about it, Ili wanted to scream but then again she reminded herself not every family had been like her own. The knock at her door shocked her out of her introspection and she frowned slightly, no one ever came to her apartment. Setting the mug on her side table she made her way to the door and when she peeked it open just a little, a feather could have knocked her over. "Nate?"

Of all the people she'd ever expected to track her down, he wasn't on the list at least not unless something bad had happened. That line of thought immediately made her heart shift into her throat and she opened the door fully, "What… is everything okay?" The concern was heavy in her voice before she absently shook her head and stepped back some, "Sorry… come in." It didn't even occur to her that she wasn't exactly dressed for company, sitting around in a pair of silk sleeping pants and a tank top with her dark hair piled into a messy bun on top of her head.

It was likely the first time he'd have ever seen her not looking perfect. Closing the door once he was in her concern was still heavy in her tone, " I mean not that I'm upset but… how did you find me?"

Nate looked as she opened the door. Shit, well there went getting away before she saw him. And then there was what she was wearing and the lack of explanation for why he was there, and she'd get to see a side of him that he rarely ever had happen- flustered, "N-No, I-I don't mean to intrude, I..." he stopped as he came back to that lack of explanation, "I don't know how to explain why I'm here, b-but it's cold so I should at least come in I-I guess so you can close the door," he realized, mentally cursing at himself before stepping just inside the door so she could close it but we practically a statue rooted to that spot.

"A-As to how I found you, well, I... remembered you talking about it... and I might have asked around and figured it out from there," he made a face as he realized how that sounded, "I wasn't trying to be weird," he pinched the bridge of his nose, "I... again, I don't really know how to explain why I'm here... I just..." he sighed as he realized he had to be honest, "I heard... about... what happened. My father mentioned a certain someone in Azkaban..." he didn't want to say it directly because he couldn't imagine she still wanted to claim him as kin, "Once I heard... I just felt I had to come see you..." he glanced up at the ceiling like it might help reverse time and undo his stupidity, "I can very much go away."

Ili stood there just sort of staring at him as he stumbled over himself to answer her question about how he'd found her place and shook her head some, "Nate it's fine… I was just curious. You're welcome here." Making her way back into the room her steps slowed when he mentioned why he'd come, Oh… he knew now. She stopped just as she reached her chair and sort of sagged back into it picking up her mug and downing the contents in a single gulp.

Forcing herself to take a breath, Ili couldn't help her eyes staying closed as she swallowed again before finding her voice. "So now you know…" Sighing heavily she unconsciously curled her nails into the cushion of her chair next to her legs, "...and now you know why I would never answer when you asked." It took a few moments before she finally opened her eyes and looked at him, "You won't… tell anyone will you Nate?"

The last thing Ili wanted was that knowledge going around the whole school and while she seriously doubted he would, she wanted to hear him say it, the assurance of him stating it out loud would go a long way. Her tension returned after a moment and she pushed from her chair before making her way over to the wall cabinets that doubled as her 'kitchen' space. Grabbing the Knotgrass Mead bottle out of one and heading back to her chair to refill her mug. If she'd felt like she needed a drink before, it was worse now.

Hearing her reaction made him wish maybe he wasn't so direct for once, but he didn't know how to be anything but at this point. Lying usually only made things worse. He shifted his feet, still standing by the door in case she decided she did want him to leave, though seeing how she was... and was that what he thought it was going into the mug? Maybe he shouldn't...

"I think I've proven I'm fairly good at keeping things that aren't other people's business secret... and I shouldn't have pried, but I wasn't even sure he was related, like a close relation at first, otherwise I wouldn't have asked questions... but my father told me everything since he knew... he knew that I was friends with you," he murmured, putting his hands in his pockets.

"I would never tell anyone anything... even if they tried to get it out of my with techniques that make my father's look tame," he said, more referencing his father being an interrogator than his own experience at his father's hands, though he had gotten pretty good at not giving into him either. He was going to be in trouble for this too, but... he wasn't leaving until he knew she was okay.

He came over towards her, stopping a few steps away, "Are you okay?" he asked her, his voice softer, not in a pitying way, no one wanted pity for these kinds of things, but in a way that was asking her to be as honest as he was.

Refilling the mug she sat the bottle down on the side table and sat back down in her chair with a soft huff of noise. "Of course," came when he spoke explaining why his father had bothered to tell him the story. Though his comment about refusing to tell anyone on pain of torture because that was essentially what a good interrogator was, a torturer. The only difference was they found ways other than physical to get under your skin.

"I appreciate the sentiment but hopefully it doesn't go that far to be honest I'm surprised it hasn't spread all over Hogwarts already." It wasn't like it was hard to look it up, all anyone had to do was dig through articles and find her surname. Anyone who really wanted to cause her no end of pain and stress would have done it in a heartbeat but surprisingly no one had, so Ili had taken that to mean no one hated her that much. She took a sip of her mug and it took a moment before she realized he'd moved away from the door and closer to her when his voice came drawing her out of her own head.

Lifting her gaze up just enough to see his face she shrugged, "Would you be? It will be 8 years on Saturday and it never…" She had to stop herself from pointing out how it never got any easier. It was the main reason she avoided her Uncle and Aunt until Christmas day, she needed the time to pull herself together after being miserable for days. "I still see them on the bad nights, when I close my eyes and if Uncle Seni hadn't been there… I'd have joined them, Alexei meant to kill me too."

The hand holding her mug trembled slightly though she didn't seem to notice, she could still hear him screaming as he'd been taken away about how he had to finish it so the Dark Lord would be pleased. Ili hadn't talked to anyone about it since she'd spent that year in therapy after the fact, even then she knew she wasn't better when it was time to start school but it at least gave her something else to focus on rather than the horror movie that had become her life at 10 years old.

Nate just listened to her, his hand shoved into his pockets as he didn't really know how to respond. He didn't know what that kind of pain was truly like. He'd never experienced anything like it. But he felt he needed to help...somehow.

"I know many people would try and throw out the sentiment of by letting him affect you like, he still wins, but.... this isn't a matter of winning or losing beyond losing everything your future could have been had he never..." he took a deep breath, "What I do know is that," he pointed to the bottle, "Only makes things worse. Because then you feel like crap and you still remember anyways," he said, shaking his head, though he wasn't saying it judgementally, just offering what he could. He'd heard his mother tell him of the types of people who tried to drown their misery and where that landed them in her care.

"But this isn't my pain. This pain belongs to only you. The pain from something like this is different for every person involved... but do they know?" he asked, meaning her aunt and uncle, "If anyone could relate... and help you through it... Wouldn't it be them?"

He let silence sit for a second before asking, "What can I do?"

Iliana was quiet as he spoke, her eyes fixed on the edge of her mug like it might hold the answers she hadn’t been able to find for years. She listened, and though there were no sharp edges to his words, they still hit deep in ways she didn’t expect. Taking another slow sip, more for something to do than anything else, before finally lowering the mug to her lap Ili thought about his words. She wasn’t sure why that mattered, but it did.

Maybe it was because he’d come. Because he’d looked for her. Because he hadn’t run the second the truth came out. “They know. I mean they know the past, I haven't told them how it is now… they've worried enough about me.” She paused there, swallowing thickly before continuing. “Uncle never talks about it, but I know it still haunts him too. And Aunt Marya…she tries so hard to pretend things are normal, but I see it in the way she looks at me or Uncle sometimes. Like she knows what we're not saying and doesn't know how to help.”

Her fingers tapped lightly on the ceramic of her mug, an absent motion she did when deep in thought or anxious, “I usually avoid them until Christmas Day. I need a few days to… I don’t know, fall apart and patch myself back together before I pretend to be okay in front of them? It’s easier for everyone.” The silence stretched, but it wasn’t empty. It was full of things she didn’t know how to say, didn’t trust herself to. Considering his question, Iliana looked at him again. Really looked. What can I do? There was no pity in his face.

Just that steady, quiet presence that had always made her feel like the world wasn’t going to crush her in one breath. “You are doing it already,” she said simply, her voice a little rough now. “You came. You’re still here. That’s more than most.” A beat passed, then she added, almost shyly, “You could… maybe just sit with me? You don’t have to say anything. I’m not really good at talking about this stuff. But it’s easier when I’m not alone.” Her free hand tugged the blanket from the back of her oversized chair, offering the other end with a small, tentative lift of her brows. “There’s room if you want.” It was an invitation, one she hadn’t extended to anyone in a long time.

Nate just listened as she spoke, really trying to understand what she was feeling and going through, giving a little nod. His mom sometimes got that look at him, like she knew something was happening, but Nate wouldn't tell her the truth of it. He took a deep breath as she spoke of wanting to fall apart by herself, also knowing that feeling. She was the only one who had known of what his father had done, but to know she'd gone through this alone? He wished he'd proven to her he was trustworthy with that information.

When she asked him to sit with her, he nodded, totally onboard with that idea anyway. He moved over and sat down on the end of the couch, giving her room. He sat back, putting his hands in his lap, "I'll stay as long as you let me," he murmured, "Even if I don't know what to really say... I agree that it's easier to face the dark when you're not alone in it. You gave me that, so if I can return the favor, I'll gladly do it. I... also don't like the idea of you being alone in such a dark place," he murmured, being his usual honest self, "I guess that's why I came in such a hurry. As soon as I heard.... I just knew I needed to get to you."

Iliana didn’t look at him at first.

Not when he moved closer and sat down, not even when he spoke again. Her gaze stayed fixed on the edge of her mug like she was afraid to meet his eyes and see something she couldn’t handle. But his words quiet, steady, heartfelt settled around her like the blanket draped across her lap. Familiar. Unspoken comfort. He still cared.

That realization landed in her chest like a soft ache. Not loud or sharp, just… persistent. The way he’d always been. The way he still was, despite everything. “I didn’t expect you to come,” she admitted after a moment, her voice quiet. “And I wouldn’t have blamed you if you hadn’t.” Her fingers tightened slightly around her mug. “I thought I was protecting myself by not telling you everything. By keeping the worst of it to myself. Like maybe if I didn’t say it out loud, it couldn’t taint anything else.”

A dry, almost humorless sound escaped her, not quite a laugh. “Stupid, right? I can't face it in my own head and the second I try to say it out loud, it feels like I’m ripping something open that never really healed.” She finally glanced over at him, hesitant but open. “And I was scared too… of what you’d think, of how everyone would look at me if they knew the full truth." Iliana set the mug aside, folding her hands in her lap to still their nervous twitching. “I am sorry for shutting you out, Nate. For not trusting you with it. For thinking you’d see me differently if you knew.”

Her breath hitched a little, and she gave a small shake of her head, eyes glassy but not spilling over. “It feels so silly now. Because you’re here. And I didn’t even have to ask.” She glanced at the blanket still draped between them and gave it a little tug in his direction again, less tentative this time. “You can stay as long as you want,” she said softly. “Even if we don’t say much. Just… thank you for not making me go through this part alone.” A beat, then almost in a whisper, “It means more than I know how to say.”

Nate listened to her without interruption, letting her get what she needed out, looking down at his hand. When she finally looked at him, he glanced over at her, watching her face as she spoke, taking in her expressions. He wasn't good with words himself, not when it was things like this. Nate was always better at doing things. His words never made the right impact.

When she invited him to come under the blanket again, he shifted to be closer, moving the blanket over his own lap, while still trying to give her personal space, as much as he wanted to draw her close and just hold her. That was probably a bit much considering they weren't even dating anymore. For which he was an asshole.

"I hate that you've gone through it alone for so long..." he murmured, "I know that can't be an easy burden... but I'll always have my hand out, you know? For when you get tired of swimming and just want to rest," he rubbed his neck at the metaphor, making a face that made it clear he thought he sounded stupid for saying it, looking back down at his hands, "And be careful with that stipulation of "as long as I want" because I might never go," he added, though he was looking away as he said it though it was almost mumbled, "A-At least not until I'm sure you're alright. Like really alright," he muttered, still too embarrassed at what felt like the cheesiest crap to leave his mouth ever, "I'm going to shut up now."

Iliana watched him fidget beneath the blanket, the way he kept giving her space even while inching closer, and it tugged at something painfully familiar in her chest. He talked around it; around them, but she could hear it anyway. In the pauses. In the way he wouldn’t quite look at her when he said he might never leave. In the quiet guilt threaded through every careful word. She smiled softly, not because it was funny, but because it was so him. “You don’t sound stupid,” she said gently. “You never did. You just… say things like you’re afraid they might matter too much.” Her eyes dropped to his hands, to the way he stared at them like they were safer than meeting her gaze. “And they do. They always did.”

A breath in. Slow. Steady.

“I knew we were good together, Nate. I’ve always known that.” Her voice wavered just slightly, but she kept going. “I didn’t walk away because I stopped caring. I left because I was scared. Of my past. Of letting it touch something that felt… good. Real. You.” She swallowed. “I didn’t even know how to say it out loud to myself back then, let alone to you.” She shifted under the blanket, turning a little more toward him now, the space between them feeling suddenly very small. “And yeah,” she admitted quietly, “I missed you. I missed us. Your stupidly steady presence. The way you made everything feel less loud. Even your feelings about PDA,” she added with the faintest hint of teasing. “Which I complained about endlessly, but still—those moments we did steal? They mattered.”

Her gaze softened, memories flickering through her mind; private corners, hushed laughter, kisses meant only for the two of them. The thought of the Winter Solstice Ball crept in uninvited, sharp and lonely. “I felt it more than I expected at the Winter Solstice Ball,” she said softly. “Being there without you, it was like something was missing the whole night.” Before she could overthink it, before fear could rear its head again; Iliana leaned in and pressed a brief, gentle kiss to his cheek. Nothing rushed. Nothing dramatic. Just honest. “I missed you,” she murmured, her forehead lingering close to his temple. “And I hate that it took everything falling apart for me to finally say it.”

Nate was quiet as usual as she spoke, looking over as he heard her voice waver, eyes scanning her face, shifting his leg until it pressed up against hers as she turned more toward him. He gave a little snort of a laugh at her teasing him about PDA, looking back down to his lap, rubbing the back of his neck. When she mentioned the dance, he nodded in quiet agreement. He hadn't really wanted to be there at all and found himself rather sour, or trying to distract himself. He closed his eyes a little as she kissed his cheek, leaning his head against hers a little as he reveled in the closeness.

"I've missed you, too," he murmured, moving his hand to rest on her leg lightly, "You say....I made things feel less loud... you made things feel less cold," he murmured, "Sure, I have my siblings, but...it was like closing the blinds after the sun's been shining all day," he said, turning to look at her again, "I don't want to focus on that though. We can't change what happened... we can decide where we want to go with it now."

He lifted his hand and gently touched her cheek, "Hopefully I can be that stupidly steady presence again," he gave her a wry smirk, "If you'll let me. Let me help you carry your burden. I can't take it from you, but I can carry you if I have to," he chuckled a little, "I won't poke at it, ask about it, you share what you want when you want, but I just want to be here for you."

Iliana felt it immediately; the shift of his leg, the weight of his hand settling on her thigh like it had always belonged there. Her breath caught, just barely, but she didn’t pull away. If anything, she leaned into it, turning her cheek more fully into his palm when he lifted his hand, eyes softening as she let herself feel this instead of overthinking it. She smiled, slow and knowing. “Nathaniel Wright,” she murmured, a teasing lilt threading through her voice, “are you asking me to be your girlfriend again?” One brow lifted just slightly, but there was no real doubt in her eyes—only warmth and a careful hope.

She nuzzled into his touch, the gesture instinctive, intimate, and very real. “Because it sounds an awful lot like you are,” she added quietly. A beat passed, then her tone shifted; still gentle, but steadier now. More certain. “We’re not the same people we were back then,” she said. “We were kids trying to pretend we weren’t carrying the weight of the world. Now we’re adults who know we are.” Her thumb brushed lightly against his wrist, grounding. “And that makes this… scarier. But also more honest.” Her gaze held his. “I don’t want you to carry me. And I don’t want to carry everything by myself anymore either.” A small, earnest smile curved her lips. “We can support each other, Nate. The way we should have before. You have so much on your shoulders too; even if you don’t always say it out loud.”

She rested her forehead briefly against his, close enough to feel his breath. “I want you back in my life. As my person,” she admitted softly. “If you’ll let me be there for you too. Not just when things are quiet, but when they’re heavy.” Her smile turned just a touch playful again, eyes shining. “So… if that was you asking...my answer would be yes.”

When she said his name, he couldn't help but smile, the kind of smile he had always saved only for her, like a knot that had been bound tight since they'd broken up had come loose. Feeling her lean into his touch, into him, it felt like all the pieces were finally moving back into alignment. He never took his eyes off hers as she spoke, taking in her words and her actions. He closed his eyes for a moment as she put her forehead against his, though when she teased, he looked at her again with a smirk.

"You always were quite good at reading between the lines, Ili," he murmured, "Always made it easier when the words felt too clunky or... cheesy," he chuckled a little, brushing his nose against hers since they were sitting so close, "We have our lives in front of us still... But I need you back in my life for that way forward to have any light in it," he murmured, "We can help each other learn how to lean on each other, to open up about the things we're used to keeping deep down in our hearts to protect everyone else," He looked to her eyes again, nothing but sincerity, that unwavering honesty in his own.

"I'd face down anything just to stay right here," his eyes drifted to her mouth for a moment before coming back to her eyes. A silent ask for permission. This wasn't what he'd thought was going to happen. Hell, he really didn't know what was going to happen; he didn't exactly have a plan- a first for him. But being here with her just felt right, and seeing her smile? That was what lit the fire in his own soul, brought warmth to someone who had let himself go numb before he ever set foot in Hogwarts at 11.

"What I wouldn't do, just to keep that smile on your face," he murmured, almost unaware of what he was saying, but he didn't back pedal from it. He didn't care that they were a couple of teenagers, technically; they'd both seen more than some adults ever would in their entire lives. They'd faced down darkness some would never know. It was because they had that they knew they could find solace in one another. It was because of that he knew... He knew he'd cross lines if he had to to make sure nothing else happened to her.

Iliana didn’t miss it. Not the way his gaze dipped to her mouth, not the way his breath changed just a fraction, not the quiet tension humming between them like a held note. Nate might have thought he was being subtle, but he was far too close for that now. Her smile softened instead of fading, eyes warm as she lifted a hand to rest lightly against his chest, right over his heart; as if she could feel the truth of his words there. “You are so easy to read,” she murmured, echoing his teasing right back at him.

She leaned in just enough that their noses brushed again, her voice dropping, playful but unmistakably sincere. “You know… a kiss would certainly help keep this smile right where it is.” Her thumb traced a slow, absent circle through the fabric of his shirt, deliberately unhurried. “I’m just saying.” Iliana tilted her head slightly, close enough now that he could feel her breath, but she didn’t quite close the distance. Not yet. “Besides,” she added softly, eyes flicking back to his, “you already know I don’t give things away that easily. You’re going to have to earn it.”

But she didn’t pull back either. She stayed right there: close, open, unafraid. Letting him see it clearly in her eyes, she wanted him. She wanted this. And when she finally spoke again, her tone gentler, grounding the moment in truth. “I’m here, Nate. And I’m not going anywhere.” An invitation. A promise. And permission—when he was ready to take it.

Hearing her say a kiss would keep her smiling, he gave a breathy chuckle, "Yes, ma'am," he murmured with a smirk at her telling him that he had to earn it. His thumb brushed her cheek as his hand was still at her cheek, sliding down more toward the side of her neck as she gave her permission.

He didn't need to be told multiple times.

He closed that little gap that was left, kissing her softly, though the feel of her lips again drew a sigh from him. He forgot how soft her lips were, that spark that came from the contact, and how easily he could just get lost in her. It was like coming up for air- or, to use his own earlier metaphor, that he'd opened the blinds again.

Then, less cautiously, he shifted them. He moved and pulled her toward him, turning so that they were both under the blanket still, with her sitting sideways across his lap. Not trying to go any further than kissing or anything to that degree, but they could at least be comfortable. He put his arms around her, leaning back on the couch, like it was the most natural position to be sitting in, "Now you're going to have to kick me out when you get sick of me," he smirked a little, "'Cause otherwise this is my new spot."

Iliana let out a soft, almost surprised laugh into the kiss, the sound caught somewhere between relief and joy. When he pulled her toward him and shifted them under the blanket, she didn’t resist in the slightest; if anything, she melted into it, settling sideways across his lap like it was exactly where she’d been meant to be all along. Once they were settled, she slipped her arms around his shoulders, fingers lacing loosely behind his neck as she tucked herself closer, her cheek resting against his. A contented sigh escaped her before she even realized she’d made it. Gods, it felt right. Warm. Safe. Like something she hadn’t realized just how badly she’d missed until it was back.

“Mm,” she murmured, eyes half-lidded as she smiled, clearly happy. “I did warn you,” she added softly, a teasing note threading through her voice. “I told you you could stay as long as you wanted.” She shifted just enough to get more comfortable, clearly having no intention of moving anytime soon. “And for the record? I don’t mind at all.” Her thumb brushed absentmindedly along the side of his neck, a small, affectionate gesture. “I think this might be the happiest I’ve felt in a while,” she admitted quietly, not pulling back, not hiding it. “So you’re stuck with me too.”

She tipped her head slightly, pressing another gentle kiss against his jaw, then settled back against him again, completely at ease. “Your new spot suits you,” she teased softly. “Just… don’t expect me to give it up easily now that you’ve taken it.”
